Dear PR Guru,

I am looking for information about the symbols used at the end of a press release. I have seen both ### and -30- at the end of press releases. I understand they represent the end of a release, but why and how did they come about?

Sincerely,

Wrap It Up

Dear Wrap,

As radio commentator Paul Harvey would say it's now time for "The Rest of the Story."

The "-30-" is the traditional journalistic closing which probably came to be during the Civil War when telegraphers tapped "XXX" at the end of a transmission, which is the Roman numeral for 30.

Since the Civil War days, distribution of news and press releases has definitely evolved into a sophisticated, streamlined process thanks to the wonderful world of technology. Still, using ### or -30- is an appropriate conclusion to let readers know that the press release has ended.
